Of all of the Native American artifacts I have found, the discovery of this axe head was the most serendipitous. When I was eleven years old, I rarely wore shoes during the summer months. While walking along a hot dirt road I decided my feet would be cooled if I shuffled through the dusty sand that had piled up along the side. First contact was with my stubbed big toe.
This quartzite axe head is 7 inches long (18 cm). Because this material does not occur in south Hampton Roads, either the material or finished object must have been obtained by the Chesepian through trade.
