Of all of the Native American artifacts I have found, the discovery of this axe head was the most serendipitous. When I was eleven years old, I rarely wore shoes during the summer months. While walking along a hot dirt road I decided my feet would be cooled if I shuffled through the dusty sand that had piled up along the side. First contact was with my stubbed big toe. This quartzite axe head is 7 inches long (18 cm). Because this material does not occur in south Hampton Roads, either the material or finished object must have been obtained by the Chesepian through trade.  Click for high-res photo
