Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
For those generous souls still wondering what to get me for Christmas, may I suggest:
● Measles vaccinations for 25 children: $25
● Emergency water containers for 6 families: $30
● Temporary shelter for 1 family: $60
● A bicycle for a Red Cross volunteer: $75
All of these and more are available at the American Red Cross 2011 Holiday Giving Catalog. I promise it will be the best online shopping you experience all year.
A thought: The Red Cross will let you announce your donation as a gift made on behalf of another. Sure, you’re donating the money you would have spent on an unneeded tchotchke for you sister (sorry, Jane), but why not forgo the self-promotion? Announcement cards and premiums (a free “thank you” gift for you!) raise administrative costs, taking resources from those in need. In the spirit of the season, why not let your gift be your little secret? This was one of Jesus’s better ideas (Matthew 6:4) and one worth observing.
The photos above were shamelessly ripped from the Red Cross website. FatChance took them, but didn’t take them.
