The likelihood of encountering a southern reindeer in North Carolina is vanishingly small, even this close to Christmas. These lichen thrive on barren sand, in forested areas dominated by longleaf pine and turkey oak. The center panel shows the lichen poking through a carpet of fallen turkey oak leaves (Quercus palustris).
