The elephant ears (Colocasia sp.) that looked so proud in July were hit hard by our first heavy frost of the season. Frost usually leaves them a slimy, slippery mess, but this year the damaged leaves are crunchy and colorful, as if they were freeze dried. And now, into the compost. For a long time (since SAT vocabulary prep when I was in high school and Nixon was president) I have wanted to use the word deliquesce in a sentence (because it is such a great word), and it almost (but not quite) fits here, so I decided to shoehorn it into this caption anyway, just to get it out of my system. Glad that’s done.
