In the Garden: Developing peony blossom (Paeonia hybrid) and ants, in Portsmouth, Virginia.
It is an old wives’ tale that peony flowers require ants to bloom properly. The ants are simply attracted to the sugars released around the bract and petal margins through the process of guttation.
